To use English as an example, British and American people pronounce the same words differently. Kana are less flexible than kanji because they are phonetic and the sounds of a language change depending on the place and time they were written. But today, I don’t want to talk about kanji, but rather look the phonetic kana. I think it is a bit like how ancient Egyptians left out the vowels of the words, because they thought any educated person could understand the word just from the consonants. Traditionally educated Japanese wrote only using the ideographic kanji, the idea being that the grammatically particles can be guessed from the context and are thus not necessary to be written down. The former is generally used for important words and the latter for grammatically particles and so on. The other (kana) is phonetic, similar to the alphabet in English. One (kanji) is ideographic, and thus conveys an often pictorial meaning. The Japanese language is written with basically two types of characters.
